Flans can be a little shaky or delicate once the baking and preparations are finished, so having a loose-based flan pan makes a lot of sense; removal of the finished product from its baking vessel becomes simplicity itself. As a frequent baker of pies, this is now one of my favourite pans. Flan pans are difficult to put in / pull out of the oven because of the loose-base and narrow sides...the handles on this pan solve the problem and I'm simply in love with it :)
