Spatulas
"Spatula" is something of a catch-all term (well, "catch-some" might be more accurate) for kitchen tools. The spatulas with the shorter silicone or rubber heads are great for scraping mixtures like cake batter off of the sides of the bowl. A spatula with a wide, squarish head is what you need for turning things like hamburgers or fried eggs. (You can see how those two tools, with the same name, could not adequately do the other's job.)
The plot thickens when you throw in the long-bladed spatulas that do things like spread fillings between layers on a cake. Then, to make matters really interesting, there's the spoon spatula, which can do a similar job to the first item we mentioned, but it does it with a bit more finesse. Suffice it to say there are a few tools that go by the same name, and having one of each will hold you in good stead.
